Whats in your Dog Treats?

The answer is IT DEPENDS!

I know you were looking for a definitive answer, but it really depends. In general most veterinarians suggest not giving your dog more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories in treats.

I know you were looking for a definitive answer, but it really depends. In general most veterinarians suggest not giving your dog more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories in treats to avoid giving your dog table scraps. There are many issues with giving your dog table scraps. For one thing your dog may learn to beg for food and as a result he or she then will only want to eat human food. Another issue with feeding your dog table scraps it is difficult to calculate the calories and if you are only suppose to give 10% of the dogs daily calorie intake as treats at most you may be grossly overfeeding your dog in treats and unnecessary calories.

What’s the Difference Between Dog Treats and Dog Food?

There is a big difference between the nutritional value of a balanced dog food and dog treats. A calorie from nutritional food and a calorie from junk food don't equate to the same nutrition.

Treats are just that: treats. The intended purpose of treats are to smell and taste delicious so it in many cases will be a great incentive to learn a trick, Conversely, your dog’s normal food, whether dry or wet, contains the correct balance of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients they need to stay healthy.

In conclusion, as the old adage goes "everything is good in moderation".
