Tips and Tricks to Teach your 4-legged Friend

We have all been there the first time you try to teach a stubborn dog basic obedience and he or she does not listen. Of course it can be frustrating and feel like they’re on the losing battle with their new canine companion.

Even if you are having difficulty in training your dog, don’t give up! There’s always hope even the most challenging dogs. Be patient that is the first step. If one approach to training is not effective it may simply be a case of changing your approach to training.

It is key to not that in the case of a dog not listening or following a command they are not necessarily trying to be intentionally defiant. In fact, they may simply not understand what it is that you are asking of them. Dogs don't speak english so the key is to focus less on being frustrated and more on what works.

Strategies for Obstinate Dogs

Be patient and go slowly. Start by working building on minor successes. It helps to begin with tricks that your dog has already mastered and then progress into more difficult tricks. By starting with successful behavior and positively reinforcing that behavior you get your dog into the correct mindset to be receptive to learn new trucks.

Stick to a routine and be consistent. One of the most common mistakes is having multiple people or other members of your family unintentionally ask for the same trick or behavior in different ways. As a result this may cause confusion in your canine friend. So, when you think your dog is being obstinate or stubborn he or she is simply confused instead. The key is to training other family members or whomever that will be interacting with your dog to training exactly like how you would training.
